According to a recent report by Matthew Belloni of Puck News, Costner’s team is still advocating for his return to complete his character arc. However, it’s now Sheridan—the mastermind behind Yellowstone—who is ready to forge ahead without him. Belloni notes that Sheridan is exceptionally pleased with how he currently wraps up the show, even in the absence of Costner. As shooting is scheduled for this spring and summer, the clock is ticking for any potential reconciliation.

Yellowstone, after its fifth season, will bid farewell as its final installment. Following this, a sequel series, tentatively titled 2024, will continue the saga. The first part of the fifth and ultimate season premiered on November 13, 2022, while the second part is scheduled to debut on November 10, 2024 .
In 2013, creator Taylor Sheridan embarked on the series, transitioning from acting to screenwriting. Drawing inspiration from his experiences in rural Texas and Wyoming, Sheridan chose Montana as the backdrop for the show, with the initial scripts centered around Livingston. Although he initially pitched the series to HBO, the network declined. However, in May 2017, Paramount Network greenlit its first scripted series, Yellowstone, comprising ten episodes. Sheridan took on the roles of writer, director, and executive producer.
Additionally, a prequel series titled 1883 (aired from 2021 to 2022) emerged from a five-year deal Sheridan signed with ViacomCBS and the MTV Entertainment Group. 1883 delves into the Dutton family’s journey during the Old West, chronicling their arduous cross-country trek before establishing the land that would eventually become the Yellowstone Ranch. Another prequel, 1923 (ongoing since 2022), focuses on an intervening Dutton generation during the era of Western Expansion, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. Meanwhile, a third spin-off, 6666, currently in development, unfolds in the present day at the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas. And finally, Paramount confirmed a fourth spin-off, 1944, in early 2023.

Yellowstone burst onto the global stage after its 2018 debut. This Western drama revolves around John Dutton III, the patriarch who owns the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, the largest ranch in the United States. John wears multiple hats: he serves as the Montana Livestock Commissioner and later becomes the governor of Montana. The show introduces a diverse cast of characters, including John’s Navy SEAL son Kayce, his protective and scheming daughter Beth, the attorney general son Jamie, and the dependable ranch foreman Rip Wheeler.
The Paramount Network original garnered acclaim, securing a Golden Globe win and earning nominations at the Emmys, Screen Actors Guild, and Producers Guild of America Awards. It also spawned an impressive network of prequels and spinoffs. Yellowstone boasts a strong ensemble, with Kevin Costner receiving praise for his portrayal of John Dutton. However, in mid-2023, rumors swirled about a conflict between Costner and the show’s team, including creator Taylor Sheridan.

Is Yellowstone a real ranch
“The Yellowstone Dutton Ranch is indeed a real place, and its cabins can be rented out for $1,200 to $1,500 per night. In reality, this ranch is known as the Chief Joseph Ranch, situated in Darby, a charming small town in western Montana.
While staying in one of the cabins was beyond my budget this time, I decided to visit the Chief Joseph Ranch. As I pulled off the highway, I was somewhat disappointed by how little of the ranch was visible. Behind a substantial gate, I caught sight of a sign welcoming visitors to the “Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.” However, beyond that, my view was limited to the rooftops of a few white barns, one of which proudly displayed the iconic Dutton brand.
